Ask Bud - Q&A
Advice about cannabis from Bud Greenleaf

Question: Are vapes an efficient way to use cannabis?

Answer: No. The big secret the vape industry is concealing is how poorly vaporizers deliver THC. They generally waste about half the THC that the higher temperatures of combustion yield. Exercise: Smoke the dessicated weed that you've already run through your vape -- it will still get you high (but you'll cough like hell).

Question: Is it true? Does marijuana use suppress dream recall?

Answer: Yes. Consequently, it is proving valuable in treating the mental agitation suffered by trauma victims.

Question: I tried a packaged brownie, standard-sized, about 2" by 2". The label said it contained 3 doses — 150mg of THC. Well, it was tiny, tasty and looked harmless, so in the name of research, I ate it all. Bad idea. As the high peaked, I felt a bit overwhelmed and paranoid. I just waited it out, and everything worked out okay, but what could I have done to handle this?

Answer: Next time, drink a glass of milk. It's an age-old remedy for any edible. (Eating something, especially fat or protein, slows digestion; a liquid is fastest.) That will do the trick and mellow the high nicely.

Question: What's the difference between Sativa and Indica?

Answer: Dispensaries offer two strains of marijuana — sativa and indica — and hybrids which mix the two. Sativa has a fruity and sweet aroma. The high is often described as cerebral, energizing, and uplifting, imparting a sense of well being and optimism. Indica has a more pungent stinky aroma. Indica puts you "in da couch," with more of a body high. It promotes calm, relaxation and stress relief. Considered best for nighttime use and insomnia.

Insights & Solutions
Personal experiences with cannabis.

The Only Way to Fly. Fred, a frequent international traveler, has learned to make his long flights less boring. After boarding, he waits until the doors close, then eats a cannabis cookie or brownie. He reports that edibles make flying much more entertaining. "When I fly, I fly."

Unexpected Solutions. Tom, a Hollywood screenwriter, sometimes uses cannabis to see through his blind spots. An afternoon's meditation helped him relax distractions and biases to reveal a creative solution. He changed the gender of one of his story's characters. The antagonist worked much better as a woman than as a man.

Ban the Brownie! The edibles industry needs some policing. No way can we allow packaging cannabis as candy and snacks. (Peanutbutter cups = DANGER!) First, there is the risk of children eating it. Second is the danger of marketing a drug in a tasty form which invites snacking, such as candy bars, chocolates, and cookies. Third, there is always an urge, during the 1 or 2 hours it takes for the high to kick in — "Maybe we didn't eat enough?" — to hasten the effects by eating more or supplementing with a smoke. We cannot allow medicine in a form that encourages overdosing! We need packaging rules that reduce the danger to children, and to ourselves! Simply put, sweet edibles are dangerous. I think it makes sense to standardize the dose in a plain cookie.

Swab Test. Nicole interviewed successfully for a job at a major grocery chain a few months ago. They asked her to take a drug test (by mouth swab) the next day, but she was smart enough to stall, and had time to research the test on the Internet. She is a regular toker, so the drug test was a challenge. What she learned is that the mouth swab is not a blood test, it is a test that measures residue in the teeth, tongue and cheeks -- and so detects only very recent marijuana usage (within 2 or 3 days) and only from inhalation (edibles leave little residue in the mouth). So, she essentially deep-cleaned her mouth to remove all traces of residue: she brushed her teeth, flossed, used mouthwash, and gargled. And she sucked on a mint candy until the last minute. She passed the test!
